With support of Services Canada the Seymour Art Gallery has a paid opportunity for a candidate under the age of 30 for a 9-week temporary Assistant Art Gallery Administrator position.

The Seymour Art Gallery, established in 1985, is a non-profit gallery in the heart of Deep Cove, North Vancouver and the only public gallery located in the district of North Vancouver. We are working to establish and maintain an active and financially sustainable art gallery that will foster excellence and promote interest in the arts.

Our foundational vision for the gallery is: Seymour Art Gallery recognizes that art is an essential part of the human experience. In pre-COVID years, we’ve welcomed more than 26,000 visitors yearly to our gallery, Gallery Shop, and special events. Along with a busy exhibition schedule, in the past, we’ve present performance events – including music, artist demonstrations, interactive art-making, and events for children.

Channeling significant effort into reaching the community online and responding to their changing needs throughout the pandemic, we have transitioned many of our programs online. The Seymour Art Gallery continues to establish a high standard in our activities for the general public in conjunction with our exhibitions.

Job Title
Assistant Art Gallery Administrator

Responsibilities
The Seymour Art Gallery continues to closely follow Provincial Health Authority guidelines related to COVID-19 and adapt to this changing situation. The health and safety of our community, visitors, volunteers, and staff continues to be our highest priority.

Seymour Art Gallery operates its ambitious exhibition schedule and many programs with a small staff team. This intimate environment offers the successful job applicant a rare opportunity to witness, and be directly involved in, the day-to-day operations of a public gallery. This position serves as an introduction to professional arts administration. The scope of this job will span research and sharing learning experiences with gallery visitors to sales processing in the Gallery Shop.

The Assistant Art Gallery Administrator will also develop an educational program. In COVID times, the Gallery has suspended some of its in-house programs for kids and will instead focus on creative and engaging at-home project kits for kids. The employee will be empowered to research the gallery’s exhibitions and create an at-home art-making program and materials kits inspired by the exhibition program. They will work with direct feedback and guidance from the gallery’s Curator/Director, and in consultation with the Gallery Assistant on concept design.

Specific Tasks
The Assistant Art Gallery Administrator will:

  • Research current and upcoming Seymour Art Gallery exhibitions and then develop and realize a suite of take-home family art project kits, based on concepts, processes, and media from the works on display
  • Work with the Seymour Art Gallery team to develop a communications plan and imagery to accompany the kit release
  • Coordinate safe kit pick-up for members of the public
  • Learn about local artists and artwork on display in Seymour Art Gallery exhibitions and communicate these findings to visitors
  • Learn about the local artists represented in the Gallery Shop and share knowledge with visitors
  • Professionally represent the gallery and provide an excellent guest experience for gallery visitors
  • Process Gallery Shop sales for visitors, using a point-of-sale system
  • Liaise with artists and volunteers
  • Assist with the installation of exhibitions: learning about how exhibitions come together, safe art handling practices, art hanging principles, and execution

Qualifications
As required by Service Canada, the successful applicant will be under the age of 30, be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and be legally entitled to work according to BC provincial legislation and regulations.

The Assistant Art Gallery Administrator will also have:

  • An interest in art and knowledge of the Metro Vancouver arts community
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High level of professionalism and ability to effectively communicate with artists, volunteers, members, and the public
  • Customer service or retail experience
  • A Strong eye for detail
  • Computer literacy is required, including proven Microsoft Office skills: Word and Excel

Assets:

  • An academic background in art education, studio art, and/or art history
  • Experience with arts programming
  • Experience using Square point of sale
  • Strong social media skills

Hours and Duration
The Assistant Art Gallery Administrator will work 30 hours per week, Wednesday to Sunday, from 11 am – 5 pm. The estimated start date is June 16 and estimated last day is August 18, 2021

Hourly wage
$17.70 per hour
