Jacquie Morgan says goodbye to the Seymour Art Gallery

After 3 months of austerity operations following the Provincial Gaming grant cuts announced at the end of the summer, the Board re-assessed the Gallery's financial situation. In early December, the Board invited Jacquie Morgan to return as Curator on a 3 days/week basis, starting in January. Unfortunately, she declined this invitation and decided to leave the Gallery, as explained in her letter to the Board of Directors, which follows.

We regret Jacquie's decision but wish her well in her future endeavours. We very much appreciate Jacquie's many years of service to the Seymour Art Gallery, the high quality of the exhibitions and events she has curated, and her efforts to grow the Gallery during her tenure as its Curator.

Dear Board of Directors for the Seymour Art Gallery,

In April 2003 I came to work at the Seymour Art Gallery. Six and a half years later, I have worked with over thirty Board Members, hundreds of artists and volunteers, municipal and provincial governments and many communities and interest groups.

With one part time staff person and many volunteers, I moved the hours of operation from 24 hours a week to 48 hours a week. I worked with the Board of directors on the completion of the Gallery Shop renovation (now the Gift Gallery) and increased the income to the gallery by almost $100,000 dollars annually through increased gallery and gallery shop sales. Membership increased up to 450 people.

Over the years the Gallery has received many generous donations including $50,000 from Ken and Joan Fowler and another from Roger and Sharon Brain that included a new digital projector, computer and sound system for the gallery.

Since 2003 the Seymour Art Gallery has won many awards from the North Shore News Readers Choice, the Outlook Best of the Best and the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce. I am very grateful for both the opportunities and the friendships made. Many Board members have worked very diligently and contributed much to the gallery. Many volunteers and artists have put so much into the gallery over the years and without them the gallery would not be what it is today.

With my accomplishments in mind and with sometime to reflect, I have come to the conclusion that it is time for me to say goodbye to the Seymour Art Gallery. Truly, I believe that the business model of the SAG has to be adjusted to reflect current realities; it is time to bring in a fresh perspective to the gallery. This is a perfect time for the Board of Directors to create a new five year vision for the gallery with someone who has fresh new ideas.

Respectfully, it is both with sadness and gratefulness that I say goodbye and wish you all of the very best in the years to come.

Sincerely, Jacquie Morgan"

It is with regret that Maggi Kneer has stepped down from her position on the board

Maggi has been the creative and hardworking fundraising committee chair for the gallery and will be greatly missed. Alan Bell recommended a replacement with extensive related experience, Mary Mahon Jones. Mary has graciously accepted a position on the board. So a fond farewell to Maggi, and a hearty welcome to Mary Mahon Jones. (Meet The Board)

Maggi Kneer

Maggi Kneer Maggi has been involved with the Seymour Art Gallery since moving to Deep Cove in 1991, firstly as part of the artist's co-op which founded the Gallery Shop in 1992, and then as a member of the Board. Maggi graduated from Emily Carr University of Art & Design in 2000, and served on the board of the BC Potter's Guild, and is currently working as a ceramic artist.
