About Us


The Seymour Art Gallery Society

Established in 1985 and in operation for over 23 years, the Seymour Art Gallery is a public, non profit society that has a reputation for artistic excellence in its' gallery, educational and community programming. The gallery is a leader in community life in the Seymour/Deep Cove area and has established a strong foundation of communication support.

Alan Bell (President)

Alan Bell After obtaining degrees in Art History & Architecture, Alan spent most of his professional career as a project planner/manager with Arthur Erickson, with a special focus on the early stages of large overseas projects. Alan was immersed in Vancouver's visual arts community from an early age through his mother, who was instrumental in the Vancouver Art Gallery Shop and BC Society of Artists, and father, noted printmaker Alistair Bell who had several exhibitions at the Seymour Art Gallery. Alan and his wife have lived in a self-designed Deep Cove "cliff-hanger" since 1975.

Sande Waters (Vice President)

Sande Waters Sande Waters lives and works in Deep Cove, North Vancouver, BC. She received her BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design, 2006 and her MFA from San Francisco Art Institute, 2009. Her paintings, drawings and photographs have been shown in Vancouver and San Francisco.

Andrew Collins (Secretary)

Andrew Collins Andrew Collins was born in London England, has worked and traveled throughout the world and lived in Canada since 1975. He's been a resident of Deep Cove since the mid 80's. Andrew is a strong supporter of community affairs, a longtime member and past executive officer of the Deep Cove Yacht Club and a contributor to the community initiative "Banners in the Cove" and Mayday celebrations. He can be heard playing his guitar at various arts and community functions on the North Shore including the Harmony Arts Festival and you can see and hear him at the opening reception of many Seymour Art Gallery exhibitions. Andrew is a Chartered Surveyor by profession, works at UBC and holds a number of industry appointments including Chair of the Public Construction Council of BC. He lives with his wife, Anne and dog, Jack in the heart of the Cove.

Norm Godding (Treasurer)

Norm Godding Norm Godding is the senior partner of Godding Sheane Chartered Accountants, a North Shore accounting practice located at the Lonsdale Quay since 1986. His directorships included non-profit and corporate boards as follows; Haig-Brown Institute, Cascade Renewable Carbon Corp., Great Southern Enterprises Corp. (public), YVR Resorts International Inc. As part of the provincially proclaimed 2008 Haig-Brown Centenary, he co-produced a one-man stage production, "Why I Fish - An Evening With Haig-Brown", which premiered in August 2008 at Campbell River, and currently is in the early stages of preparing for a provincial tour. Norm is an avid outdoorsman, including hunting and fishing. He participates in competitive fly-fishing, and along with his team, won the "gold" at the 2005 Canadian National Fly Fishing Championships in Campbell River, BC. He has recently renewed his interest in painting in the "water colour" medium.

Jodi Heinhorst

Jodi Heinhorst Jodi Heinhorst, BS (U of Illinois, Textiles/Marketing). Jodi is a jewelry artist with a career background in publishing sales & marketing, acquisitions, and editorial . Jodi is also a current strata board president.

Mary Mahon Jones

Mary Mahon Jones Mary Mahon Jones is a graduate of the University of Guelph and Queens University, and holds separate degrees in Fine Arts and Education. Her working career has focused on culture and tourism: from a decade of work as a gallery educator at Saskatchewan's MacKenzie Art Gallery in the 1980's, to heading up SaskCulture, which provided lottery funding to cultural organizations, until 1998, followed by another decade as the CEO of BC's tourism industry association (COTA). While in Saskatchewan, she was an enthusiastic volunteer, which includes terms as President of the Museums Association of Saskatchewan and Chair of the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation. In BC, she served as a member of the Board of the Vancouver Playhouse.

After stepping down from COTA in 2007, Mary opened her own business, providing consulting services focused on tourism and culture. To date, her principal clients have been the Canadian Tourism Commission and Parks Canada.

Mary enjoys gardening, jewelry-making, canoeing and kayaking, and lives in Deep Cove with her husband Bob and two very spoiled cats.

Larry Belsito

Larry Belsito Larry has spent the last 45 years in the hotel business, 15 years on the accounting side, and 30 years as General Manager of hotels across Canada as well as in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Fiji, Dubai, Qatar and the USA. He has served on Tourism Boards in Vancouver, Puerto Rico, Fiji and Dubai; the Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion Task Force; Advisory Board of Random Acts of Kindness in BC; and as served as President at various times of Rotary, Vancouver Hotel Association and Skal International Vancouver.

Tammy Chamberlayne

Tammy Chamberlyne For many years I have lived in Deep Cove with my husband, and our two sons. I have always taken great pride in the fact that Deep Cove is fortunate enough to be the home of The Seymour Art Gallery. I first got involved with the Gallery when my husband began selling his photography in the Gallery Shop. Since then I have been volunteering and Fundraising for the Gallery. Art, Music & Culture are a very important part of my life and it gives me great pleasure to serve this wonderful Community organization.

Svetlana Bardos

Svetlana Bardos Svetlana's original background is in restoration of historical structures in Europe and she holds an MS degree in Civil Engineering. She has always been passionate about visual arts and literature, and her primary interest is textile art. She collaborated with and designed costumes for various theatre groups for a period of about 15 years. After the completion of the Textile Art Program at Capilano University, she got deeply interested in puppet design, fabric design and creating one-of-a kind pieces of clothing. She enjoys experimenting with unusual materials and combines them with hand printed materials and found objects. Since the inception of the North Shore Theatre for Children in 2004 (Svetlana is one of the founders), she has been designing and creating puppets and costumes for all of the productions as well as writing lyrics and short poems. She loves the ambiance of Deep Cove and feels thrilled to be a part of the Seymour Art Gallery team.

Sarah Cavanaugh (Curator)

Sarah Cavanaugh Sarah received her Bachelor of Fine Art with distinction from the University of Saskatchewan in 2002. She has since been employed in the arts (with public and commercial galleries, artist-run centres, and art collections) while maintaining an active painting practice.

Marina Van Den Berg (Gallery Administrator)

Marina Marina was born in a small town in South Africa. She graduated from university with a B Comm degree (majoring in Mathematics, Economics, Statistics and Econometrics) and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Education; then taught at various secondary schools for seven years. Having always enjoyed studying, Marina returned to university and obtained a B Comm Honours degree, followed by an M Comm degree, specializing in Micro- and Macro-Economics and Econometrics. She lectured for seven years at a university of technology and also spent six years in the private sector. After surviving a hijacking attempt, Marina decided to immigrate to Canada and in 2010 received permanent resident status. She started volunteering at the Seymour Art Gallery in December 2010, and is thrilled to now have the opportunity to work here.

Gail Hanlon (Weekend Gallery/Shop Staff)

Meg Troy Montréal born and now North Vancouver resident Gail Sheehan Hanlon a.k.a Meg Troy began to develop her artistic abilities early in life. At the age of 20 Gail was an accomplished singer and guitar player, recorded by a London Record label followed by numerous, television radio and club appearances. More recently Gail has had poetry published and hailed as an outstanding achievement in the art of poetry. Now Gail is inspired to try her hand at writing children's stories with accompanying songs and to begin painting under the patient guidance of internationally acclaimed artist and teacher James Picard. It is best summed up by saying GAIL or MEG to some, continues to celebrate a lifetime of creative exploration. Her talent has an explosive quality and quantity to it. When asked "Where do all your idea's come from?" she answers... "From my heart of course" Gail continues to support the gallery by both volunteering her time and as staff looking after both the gallery and the gift shop every weekend.

The Volunteers

The Seymour Art Gallery could not exist without the help of so many willing and able volunteers. Taking on all tasks from working in the Gallery Shop, helping customers find what they need and providing valuable background on the artists and their work, to helping to install each exhibit.

The gallery always needs new volunteers, so if you would like to contribute to the community by working in a fun, supportive and vibrant gallery then please get in touch with the gallery (see above for contact details)

Anne Love

Anne Love (Textiles, U of Maryland). Exhibited with the Vancouver Guild of Fabric Arts, in the Canadian Craft museum, most of the galleries in the lower mainland and in Washington State. Vice President, President, Exhibitions Chair, Publicity Chair, Coordinator 20th Celebration for the Vancouver Guild of Fabric Arts. Juror for Crafts & Fashion at the PNE and other craft and art competitions in B.C. Seymour Art Gallery - directed & produced video for exhibition, co-curated exhibition the Boudoir, narrated a fashion show, volunteer for the gift shop. Published in North Shore News, Vancouver Sun, Arts Alive, Artichoke, Where, Soft Dolls & Animals Magazine, Quilting Arts magazine.

Stuart Ashman (Web Site Administrator)

Stuart Ashman A manager of Software Quality and Release teams for a global Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam company, Stuart has volunteered for the gallery for the past 2 years, helping set up the office network and resolving general computer issues, and looks after the gallery website. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree with Honours from the University of Kent at Canterbury in the UK. Stuart has been working in the Electronics and Software industry for about 24 years. Stuart and his wife moved from the UK to BC 5 years ago and instantly fell in love with Deep Cove and the gallery. The Seymour art gallery has always inspired and made us feel welcome and he is proud to be able to support it in any way he can.
